James Walker Nichols plays solo guitar and in small ensembles at events throughout Southern California.

James grew up in Southern California beach towns and  began studying guitar seriously at the age of 14.  Seriously involved in athletics in high school (James was captain of the varsity football team), he was also studying the guitar.

He first played music professionally while a student at San Diego State University, where he graduated with a degree in English Literature and completed two years of post-graduate studies.

While a student at San Diego State University James worked at the Backdoor, a student-operated music venue. It gave him an up-close look at the music industry and the chance to interact with a diverse group of artists, from Tom Waits to The Ramones to jazz great Eddie Harris.

Originally a rock player, there was always a strong interest in jazz. Seeing and hearing artists like Joe Pass and Bill Evans in concert were turning points.

James has performed with a wide range of musical groups over the years. His current musical direction includes both teaching and performing music. He's taught guitar, bass and piano at schools (including 8 years as guitar instructor for the local school district) and community centers, conducted week-long music camps, and currently works with a number of talented private students.

James also has coached a number of rock bands, both at schools and privately.

James' background reflects his interest in education, including working several years at the University of California at San Diego conducting research and designing, developing and implementing learning programs.

Some of the venues and locations James has performed at include:

  • Kona Kai Club Shelter Island San Diego
  • Del Mar Hilton
  • Scripps Hospital La Jolla (Art Exhibit Opening)
  • Rancho Santa Fe Country Club
  • La Costa Resort
